BRIEF HISTORY
It all began in 1872, at the home of Amos Henry, on the corner of First and Broad Streets, with only 12 members.
Between the years of 1915 - 1935 was the period of planning and rebuilding under the direction of Rev. B. Whitney Clark.
Early in 1936, services began in the basement of our current building, 116 So. Verity Parkway. At that time chairs were use for the congregation, the pulpit, and the choir. The large tub was used for baptism. The Sunshine Circle was a vital part of Second Baptist, which is an organization that still remains today. Rev. B. Whitney Clark resigned in 1941, leaving Rev B Mitchell as acting pastor, and Rev. T. M. Campbell as assistant. By 1943 Rev. Campbell was pastor. He organized JR. Church, which lead to many auxiliaries and members to continue service in the basement. In 1949,Rev. Campbell resigned and Rev. Was became pastor in 1950 and remained so until his death one year later.
During the progressive period of 1954 - 1964, completion and remodeling took place. Rev. Rollin Hans became pastor in the summer of 1954. Within two years with Rev Hans as pastor, the congregation completed the sanctuary, paid the mortgage, and began remodeling the basement area.
In 1964 Rev Hans resigned due to disinterest.
Rev. N. L. Cooper became pastor in 1969, which brought a spiritual uplifting. New auxiliaries were formed, such as the Pastors Aid Society, and the B.T.U. These auxiliaries continue to work on various projects to enhance the church.
In the 80 remodeling once again took place at the church new windows were added, air-conditioning organ, elevator, new front entry door, and many other projects.
Over the years, under Pastors Cooper tutelage the church was blessed with 13 assistant ministers. Many more projects to please to maintain and beautify the church. Many more projects took please to maintain and beautify the church.
After the retirement of Rev. Cooper Rev. Enorris Thomas serve faithfully as interim pastor. Reverend Ronald Green became pastor in 2009 but due to unforeseen circumstances Reverend Green only served as pastor until February 14, 2010.
Again Rev. Enorris Thomas served as interim pastor. Keeping our church family together and praising God for all blessings.
Bishop Mark Monroe was called on February 6, 2011 with a division to educate, equip, and encourage ministry by spreading the gospel and meeting the need by promoting support of systems of church, community, and family. Spiritual growth is taking place here at 2nd Baptist and we are significantly blessed for 145 years.
